Presentation says proclivity to gangs begins in childhood

ASHEVILLE – Ann Weatherly wants to help change patterns that could lead youngsters to gangs.

“I just think we need programs that teach people how to be parents,” said Weatherly, a teacher at Erwin High School. “I think the first five to eight years of a child’s life is where they’re going to form the attitudes. … I don’t think we’re doing enough to address that age level.

“I want to have something to do with shaping my students,” Weatherly said. “If I can learn enough to help break the pattern or to help break that mold, then I want to learn it.”
